What kind of a planet is Mercury, anyway?
Mercury is the planet of information and transmission. It governs spoken and written words and characters, communication, and intelligence, among others. Specifically, it influences the following aspects of our lives:
Conversations
Smartphones, computers, and other electronic devices
Telephones
Emails
Social media
Transportation
Documents
Learning
Timing
As you can see, in this age of information, Mercury is a planet that is closely tied to our day-to-day existence.
What happens when the Mercury goes into retrograde?
The eight planets in the solar system (does not include the Sun, the Earth, or the Moon) occasionally go into a phenomenon known as “retrograde,” in which the planet appears to be moving in the opposite direction, due to its relative position to the Earth. In astrology, retrograde signifies a state in which the power of that planet cannot manifest smoothly.
As I mentioned before, Mercury is the planet that is closely tied to our daily lives. It also happens to go into retrograde the most frequently, which is three times a year. Furthermore, each retrograde period spans three weeks, which is quite long. This is why it’s so important to understand the nature of Mercury retrograde.
So what tends to happen when Mercury is in retrograde?
Public transit in disarray
Sudden schedule changes
Miscommunication
Email not being sent or sent by mistake
Troubles with computers and smartphones
Sudden disappearance of data
Mistakes or inaccuracies on written documents
If you saw this list and thought, “Whoa, that sounds like a nightmare,” I totally understand. But why not take it as an opportunity to be more mindful and follow these guidelines:
Leave room in your schedule
Double-check your email draft before you send it
Confirm that the recipient has received your email
Save data frequently, and create backups
Make sure important documents are reviewed twice or even three times
For conversations held during the retrograde, be sure to follow up after the retrograde
These are all pretty easy to do, right? Rather than being overly concerned about Mercury retrograde, let’s focus on staying calm and extra mindful.
